On the south end of the corridor, the connection to Interstate Highway 94 is a 7.5-mile (12.1 km) stretch through the Eau Claire-Chippewa Falls conurbation. After years of legal and political wrangling, the decision was made in the late 1990s to bypass the current route, rather than to convert the present highway to freeway standards.
The highway is concurrent with County Highway X from its western terminus to US 53 on the west end of Chippewa Falls. It enters Chippewa Falls as River Street before turning onto WIS 124 and heading south. BTH-29 leaves WIS 124 at a roundabout in south Chippewa Falls and continues east to WIS 29.

It passes into the Chippewa Valley metropolitan area and south of Chippewa Falls as a freeway and crosses US 53 at a cloverleaf interchange in Lake Hallie.
