Kaw Lake is a reservoir completed in 1976 in the northern reaches of the U.S. state of Oklahoma, near Kaw City which is located on a hill overlooking the lake. The lake is approximately 8 miles (13 km) east of Ponca City. [1] Newkirk is 6 miles (9.7 km) west of the upper end of the lake.

Ponca State Park is a public recreation area located on the banks of the Missouri River four miles (6.4 km) north of Ponca, Nebraska, in the northeastern corner of the state. The state park 's approximately 2,100 acres (850 ha) are situated among high bluffs and steep, forested hills adjacent to the Missouri National Recreational River .
Lahontan State Recreation Area is a public recreation area surrounding Lake Lahontan, a 17-mile-long (27 km) impoundment of the Carson River, [4] located approximately 18 miles (29 km) west of Fallon, Nevada. [5] The reservoir features 69 miles (111 km) of shoreline and 11,200 acres (4,500 ha) of water when full. [6]
The Ponca signed their last treaty with the US in 1865. [11] In the 1868 US-Sioux Treaty of Fort Laramie [12] the US mistakenly included all Ponca lands in the Great Sioux Reservation. Conflict between the Ponca and the Sioux/Lakota, who now claimed the land as their own by US law, forced the US to remove the Ponca from their own ancestral lands.
The park is located in a part of Nevada that in prehistoric times was under Lake Lahontan.When the lake had receded lower than the present-day reservoir, by about 23,000 years ago, animals such as camels, horses, rabbits, and squirrels would drink from the river, and some of their fossils have been found about 14 miles (23 km) north of the dam.
