Louis III de Bourbon, Duc de Montpensier (10 June 1513 – 23 September 1582) [1] was the second Duke of Montpensier, a French Prince of the Blood, military commander and governor. He began his military career during the Italian Wars, and in 1557 was captured after the disastrous battle of Saint-Quentin .
Louis was the son of Peter de Bourbon [1] and Isabella de Valois. [2] His mother was the sister to King Philip VI of France. He inherited the duchy after his father Duke Peter I died at the Battle of Poitiers in 1356. [3] In 1390, Louis launched the Barbary Crusade against the Hafsids of Tunis, in conjunction with the Genoese.

He was the third son of François de Bourbon and Marie de Luxembourg, Countess of St. Pol, he was raised largely in the castle of La Fere, where his mother had come to reside after being widowed. He was godfather to Louis de Bourbon, Prince de la Roche-sur-Yon. He is sometimes called Francois-Louis, with Vendome Latinised as "Vendocimo".

The eldest son of Gilbert de Bourbon and Clara Gonzaga , Louis inherited the title of comte de Montpensier (count of Montpensier) upon the death of his father in 1496.
