The chemical compound is an anti-coagulant with active half-life longer than warfarin and other synthetic 1,3-indandione anticoagulants. [3] [4] It is toxic to mammals, in all forms; exposure and oral ingestion of the toxin may cause irregular heartbeat and major maladies associated with its impact on blood clotting, depending on dose. [5]
1,3-Indandione (sometimes simply indanedione) is an organic compound with the molecular formula C 6 H 4 (CO) 2 CH 2. It is a β-diketone with indane as its structural nucleus. It is a colorless or white solid, but old samples can appear yellowish [ 3 ] or even green.
It has a sweet taste and thus dogs will drink it. As little as 2 1/2 tablespoons can kill a medium-sized dog in 2–3 days. This type of poisoning is often fatal as dog owners do not know their pet has ingested the antifreeze. De-icing fluids can also contain ethylene glycol. Paraquat is used for weeding and grass control.
Pindone is an anticoagulant drug [3] for agricultural use. It is commonly used as a rodenticide in the management of rat and rabbit populations. It is pharmacologically analogous to warfarin and inhibits the synthesis of Vitamin K -dependent clotting factors .
Coumarins have shown some evidence of biological activity and have limited approval for few medical uses as pharmaceuticals, such as in the treatment of lymphedema. [9] [12] Both coumarin and 1,3-indandione derivatives produce a uricosuric effect, presumably by interfering with the renal tubular reabsorption of urate. [13]

Anisindione (brand name Miradon) is a synthetic anticoagulant and an 1,3-indandione derivative. It prevents the formation of active procoagulation factors II, VII, IX, and X, as well as the anticoagulant proteins C and S, in the liver by inhibiting the vitamin K–mediated gamma-carboxylation of precursor proteins. [1]
After introducing medically assisted treatment in 2013, Seppala saw Hazelden’s dropout rate for opiate addicts in the new revamped program drop dramatically. Current data, which covers between January 1, 2013 and July 1, 2014, shows a dropout rate of 7.5 percent compared with the rate of 22 percent for the opioid addicts not in the program.
