Pontiac (/ ˈ p ɒ n (t) i æ k / PON-(t)ee-ak) is a city in and the county seat of Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. [3] Located roughly 26 miles (41.8 km) northwest of downtown Detroit, Pontiac is part of the Detroit metropolitan area, and is variously described as a satellite city or suburb of Detroit.
The engine was the pinnacle of Pontiac engine development and was a strong performer that included a few race-specific features, such as provisions for dry-sump oiling. The only non-traditional Pontiac V8 engines were the 301 cu in (4.9 L) and the 265 cu in (4.3 L).
Pontiac was the first of the companion marques introduced, and in its first year sold 49,875 units. [3] By 1929, GM sold 163,000 more Pontiacs than Oaklands. The discontinuation of Oakland was announced with the onset of the Great Depression in 1931. Pontiac was the only companion make to survive beyond 1940, or to survive its "parent" make.
The Pontiac Silverdome, formerly known as the Silverdome, was a stadium located in Pontiac, Michigan, United States. It opened in 1975 and sits on 127 acres (51 ha) of land. When the stadium opened, it featured a fiberglass fabric roof held up by air pressure, the first use of the technique in a major athletic facility.
The location that Oakland inhabited was the original site of Cartercar when GM bought the company in 1909 by William Durant. [1] The plant ceased production of full-size Pontiacs after the 1980 model year but continued to build mid-size Pontiacs ('81-82 Grand Prix, '81 LeMans, '82 Bonneville G) until being idled on August 6, 1982.
