The City of Overton has had a storied history with radical groups [who?] claiming the site as their base of operations. The Republic of Texas operated within the city limits from the early 2000s, up until the building was mysteriously burned down. Overton has a historical voting base consisting primarily of older, Republican-leaning voters. [6]

View from the entrance to the cemetery. Whittaker Memorial Cemetery is a cemetery near Kildare, Texas. It was added to the Texas Historical Commission in 1996. The cemetery was once portion of a plantation worked by slaves and those buried are African American. The plantation was owned by Willis Whitaker who separated six acres for slave burials.

Howze as a West Point cadet. Howze was born to Captain James A. Howze, of the 14th Texas Cavalry, and Amanda Hamilton Howze in Overton, Rusk County, Texas.After graduating from Hubbard College in 1883, [1] he attended the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point, New York and was in the graduating class of 1888. [2]
Burials apparently commenced at the new location; the oldest headstone in the cemetery standing today is that of Rev. Benjamin Foscue who died of cholera on January 1, 1850. [2] In the spring of 1858, the minutes for the City of Jefferson indicate that attention was given to further planning at the cemetery.
