Alder is located in west-central Madison County at (45.324531, -112.108035), in the Ruby Valley Alder Creek enters the valley from the east and passes east of the community. Montana Highway 287 passes through town, leading east 9 miles (14 km) to Virginia City , the county seat , and northwest 10 miles (16 km) to Sheridan .
KOA was founded in 1962 in Billings, Montana, by businessmen Dave Drum, John Wallace and two other partners. Drum got the idea to start the campgrounds while walking his property along the Yellowstone River and seeing travelers heading to the Seattle World's Fair.
Barton Gulch, along with the Alder site, are regarded as the type sites for the Blackwater Draw Paleo-Indian archaeological culture, and believed to be a Clovis culture. Most of the excavations of Barton Gulch were done by Dr. Les Davis, a professor at Montana State University, in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
