The college was established in 1973 as the Chattahoochee Valley State Junior College by an act of the Alabama State Legislature. It opened in January 1974 in a temporary location with 280 students, and in April 1974 had 1,239 students. Local residents donated 103 acres (42 ha) of land for the college's permanent buildings.

The Alabama Community College System was founded 1963 when the public two-year colleges in Alabama were linked into a single system governed by the State Board of Education. The system was separated from the State Board of Education and put under control of the Department of Postsecondary Education in 1982.
