Richard King (July 10, 1824 – April 14, 1885) was a riverboat captain, Confederate, entrepreneur, and most notably, the founder of the King Ranch in South Texas, which at the time of his death in 1885 encompassed over 825,000 acres (3,340 km 2).

Helen Kleberg was the only child of Robert Justus Kleberg Jr. and Helen Campbell Kleberg. Robert Kleberg Jr. was the son of Robert Kleberg and Alice King-Kleberg, who was the daughter of Henrietta and Richard King, founder of the King Ranch. The ranch was purchased by the state of Alabama in 1940 [3] and had been operated by director and warden Charles A.
