Thanks for posting the Frances Bavier interview OP.%0D %0D She seems to me like a very intelligent and thoughtful person. She doesn't say that she disliked Andy and actually gives him a lot of credit for what she perceived was good about the show.
Frances Bavier did apologize years later for not being very nice to Andy, yes. I think it was not that complicated. She fancied herself an "actress" and got stuck playing Aunt Bee..for a hefty salary. I bet she felt she compromised her career in that regard, the same as Robert Reed felt about playing dad Brady.
I read the book Andy and Don a few years ago. IIRC, Andy had no problems with Jim other than a little jealousy over Jim's singing ability. Jim got along with everyone, even the prickly Frances Bavier. However, Andy did not like George "Goober" Lindsey.
Frances Bavier was still alive but in poor health. By that point, she had retired from public life and was living as a recluse, holed up in her house in Siler City. She was invited to participate in Return to Mayberry--though I'm sure those extending the offer had to know it would not be accepted, given her condition at the time.
Not only did Andy and Don lead very different lives off camera, Frances Bavier was known (and despised) by most all of the cast and crew on TAGS. She was a mean old bitch and let everyone know it. Howard Morris (who played Ernest T. Bass) directed several of the episodes.
How will Frances Bavier react if she doesn't win the Oscar for best actress? Although she won the Emmy Award, something about her tells me she wouldn't be a gracious loser. I also remember the look on her face a couple years back when Mary Tyler Moore was giving her acceptance speech at the Emmys.
