i686 is the 32-bit version, and x86_64 is the 64-bit version of the OS. The 64-bit version will scale with memory better, particularly for workloads like large databases which need to use lots of ram in the same process. Do not consider running a (significant) database server on a 32-bit machine.
i686 is short to the P6 microarchitecture by intel, introduced with the Pentium Pro1. In short words, it is 32-bit architecture. 8086 and 80286 are even 16-bit processors. 80386 is the first 32-bit Intel processor (introduced Protected mode of work, in addition to Real mode). 80586 is the famous Pentium™.
i686 is post Pentium generation. No one today have i386, they are at least 15 years old. That being said, i386 marks a 'compatibility' build and should work on ANY 32bit x86 CPU. i686 may or may not use MMX, SSE and more extensions.
Select an LUBUNTU image according to your Box.. Choose for 32 bits. PC (Intel x86) desktop CD. For almost all PCs. This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processo

Please note that you probably won't find terms x86-32 or x86-64 mentioned if GNU/Linux utilities. Most likely you'll see something like i386/i486/i586/i686 for 32bit CPUs and amd64 for 64bit CPUs (original Intel 64bit CPUs were not part of the x86 family, so 64 bit extensions to x86 instruction set are often called amd64 because AMD made first x86 64bit processors).
x86_64 refers to 64-bit processors.i386 refers to 32-bit processors.. If you really do have an Intel Core 2 Duo, then it is a 64-bit processor.
On the Android-x86 download page, the following are listed. What is the difference between these? And which one to download to install on, for e.g., an Intel-based PC (i5)? Thank you very much. an...
I was trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 in VirtualBox 4.2.12r84980. I see this kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detects an i686 CPU, unable to boot But I am using a 64 bit Windows 8, and tr...
No, x86_64 is the real 64bit architecture. You are conflating it with i686 PAE (physical address extension implemented using virtual memory tables of operating system) which extends memory support beyond 32bit memory space (beyond 4GB). –
