The CFL is the highest professional level of Canadian football in the world. The league is headquartered in Toronto. The CFL was officially named on January 19, 1958, [3] upon the merger between the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union or "Big Four" (founded in 1907) and the Western Interprovincial Football Union (WIFU) (founded in March 1936). [4]
In the latter year, the teams were aligned into a new South Division. The three years saw numerous ownership debacles on both sides of the U.S.–Canada border. The Baltimore Stallions became the only American-based team to win the Grey Cup championship, in 1995. With the exception of Baltimore, all of the American teams consistently lost money.
After the merger of the Big Four and WIFU, the first 29 CFL seasons each consisted of nine teams playing in the same nine cities. [1] In 1961, inter-conference play began during the regular season. Until 1973, Western Canadian teams played 16 games, while Eastern Canadian teams played 14 games.

The franchise folded after the 1981 season, but a new team named the Concordes took their place in the East Division and inherited the Alouettes' history.
