The school was the fourth national high school to be established in PNG. Part of PNG's "Schools of Excellence" program, in 2021 it was ranked second of the six national schools, based on exam results. Around one half of its students go on to tertiary education. [2]
The school is situated about 20 km (12.4 mi) south of the town of Wewak in the East Sepik Province of PNG. It was converted to being a national high school in the late 1960s and its boarders come from all over the country. The aim of having such national schools was to develop a concept of national unity in a culturally diverse society.

Sogeri National High School is a school situated in Sogeri in the Central Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG). It was the country's first national high school and it educates students from all over the country in Forms 5 and 6 (Grades 11 and 12), prior to their going on to tertiary education.
The school for white students was renamed Richard Montgomery High School (after a Major General Richard Montgomery, who had been a slave holder [5] [6]) to distinguish between the two in 1935. [7] After a fire destroyed the old high school building in 1940, the building was rebuilt on the current site in 1942, measuring 49,167 sq ft (4,567.8 m 2).
