Lycoris squamigera is an herbaceous plant with abundant and long (up to 12" long and 1" wide) leaves ("clothes") that appear in spring. The leaves are no longer present when the flowers emerge much later, without their "clothes", from the bare ground, hence the name "Naked Ladies".
The flowers are produced in late spring to early summer, white in color and on a single spike-like raceme 15–25 cm long on top of a 20–50 cm tall stem. Each individual flower has five petals, and is up to 4 mm (5 ⁄ 32 in) in diameter. The fruit is a small capsule containing numerous seeds.
Gypsophila paniculata is much used in the floristry trade (where it is often simply called "gyp") providing an effective backdrop for larger or more structured blooms. It is commercially cultivated in Peru, forming a major portion of that country's flower exports. [7]
