Covington is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census , the population was 5,737, [ 4 ] making it the second-least populous city in Virginia. It is surrounded by Alleghany County , of which it is also the county seat . [ 5 ]
The News Virginian traces its publishing history to the Valley Virginian, which issued its first edition in 1901. [3] The Valley Virginian consolidated with the Waynesboro News in November 1929, becoming the Waynesboro News-Virginian by owner / publisher Louis Spilman. [4] In 1960, the paper took on its current moniker of The News Virginian. [5]
The newspapers are now printed at a facility in Hanover, Virginia. The Times-Herald published its final edition on August 30, 1991, leaving The Daily Press as the only major newspaper of the lower and middle Peninsula. In December 2014, The Daily Press relocated to its current location on Mariners Row in City Center at Oyster Point in Newport News.

Slover as the result of several mergers of papers dating back to 1865. [10] The Virginian-Pilot covered the Wright brothers' early flights. [11] Slover's nephew Frank Batten Sr. became publisher at age 27 in 1954.
In a study released this past fall examining 28 states, the CDC found that heroin deaths doubled between 2010 and 2012.
