That year, the Aladdin Company of Bay City, Michigan, offered the first kit homes through mail order. In 1908, Sears issued its first specialty catalog for houses, Book of Modern Homes and Building Plans, featuring 44 house styles ranging in price from US $360–$2,890. The first mail order for a Sears house was filled that year.

The Aladdin Company. The Aladdin Company was a pioneer in the pre-cut, mail order home industry. Sometimes referred to as Aladdin Readi-Cut Houses, the company was the first to offer a true kit house composed of precut, numbered pieces. [1] Its primary competitors were Montgomery Ward and Sears, Roebuck and Co. in the US and Eaton's in Canada.
The houses sold for between $8,500 and $9,500, according to a March 1949 article in the Columbus Dispatch—about 25 percent less than comparable conventional housing. By November 1949, however, a Lustron's average selling price had come up to $10,500. Most of the known Lustron houses were constructed in 36 of the United States, including Alaska.
In the United States, several companies, including Sears Catalog Homes, began offering mail-order kit homes between 1902 and 1910.
