It is sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). In 2020, it was awarded the PRCA Small Rodeo of the Year award.

The event is commonly called the National Finals or NFR. The inaugural National Finals Rodeo in 1959 took place in Dallas, Texas, and the event would remain there through 1961. [9] The rodeo section of the Fort Worth Stock Show moved to the new Dickies Arena in 2020. The 2021 Stock Show was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic; only the second time in the event's history.
