Roger Mason (born 4 May 1941) is an English geologist who is best known as the discoverer of the original type fossil, Charnia masoni, of a Precambrian (more than 540 million years old) organism that is part of the Ediacaran biota. He is now a professor at the China University of Geosciences in Wuhan, China.
Charnia is significant because it was the first Precambrian fossil to be recognized as such. The living organism grew on the sea floor, 570 to 550 million years ago, and is believed to have fed on nutrients in the water.
The fossil examined in the study, collected during a 2011 expedition by the Antarctic Peninsula Paleontology Project, was found encased in rock that dated back 68.4 to 69.2 million years and ...

The organism is in the shape of a flattened torus, with the long axis of its toroidal body running through the approximate center of the presumed ...
