In computing, kernel same-page merging (KSM), also known as kernel shared memory, memory merging, memory deduplication, and page deduplication is a kernel feature that makes it possible for a hypervisor system to share memory pages that have identical contents between multiple processes or virtualized guests.
In the calling process the lowest numbered unused file descriptor will be used for the new file descriptor number. When using the dup2() system call it performs the same task as dup() with the exception of using the file descriptor number specified in the newfd variable of the call, in that newfd is adjusted to refer to the oldfd file description.
Modern Linux distributions include a /run directory as a temporary filesystem , which stores volatile runtime data, following the FHS version 3.0. According to the FHS version 2.3, such data were stored in /var/run , but this was a problem in some cases because this directory is not always available at early boot.
Target deduplication is the process of removing duplicates when the data was not generated at that location. Example of this would be a server connected to a SAN/NAS, The SAN/NAS would be a target for the server (target deduplication). The server is not aware of any deduplication, the server is also the point of data generation.
The umsdos filesystem driver automatically prepends the C:\LINUX\ to all pathnames. The location of the Linux root directory is supplied to the umsdos filesystem driver in the first place via an option to the loadlin command. So, for example, loadlin would be invoked with a command line such as loadlin c:\linux\boot\vmlinuz rw root=c:\linux.
