Libre Map Project - As part of The Libre Map Project I've created a database with all the GNIS place names from the USGS. It displays the Latitude and Longitude in decimal format so you don't have to convert. To display a list of every town, county, villag, etc., select a state and set the Feature Type to "civil". All data and queries are Free.
Location map templates as of 5 Nov 2014. To find the best location map template covering a given place, open the SVG file in a Web browser and use arrow keys and zoom function. Hovering over a region shows its name and highlights it. Clicking it loads its page. This is a list of all Location map templates as of July 22, 2021.
By default the base map uses mapstyle='osm-intl'. Progressively higher zoom levels bring more place names onto the map, in the language/script of the wiki/user preference, where that is available. For some contexts it may be preferred to 'turn off' the place name labels, and use the mark/label options to provide such names as are wanted.
