Cleco (Cleko) fasteners on an aircraft wing. A cleco, also spelled generically cleko, is a temporary fastener developed by the Cleveland Pneumatic Tool Company. [1] Widely used in the manufacture and repair of aluminum-skinned aircraft, it is used to temporarily fasten sheets of material together, or to hold parts such as stiffeners, frames etc together, before they are permanently joined.
The company was founded in 1901 at 160 East Lake street in Chicago as the McMaster-Davis Supply Company. [6] [7] Starting with $50,000 in investor capital, its founders were T.J. McMaster, a former stationary engineer, and F.C. Davis, who had been a chief engineer in the U.S. Navy.
In my experience, Cleco is the "official" name for the fastener, it being short for CLEvelandpneumatictoolCOmpany. Cleko was sort of a generic non-trademark-infringing name.
