Echinocereus stramineus is a species of cactus, with stramineus meaning made of straw. There are various common names such as strawberry cactus, porcupine hedgehog cactus, straw-color hedgehog, and pitaya. The straw-colored spines distinguishes this particular plant from other Echinocereus. The aged spines may turn white in color and are very ...
Seeds are black and about a tenth of an inch in size. Stems are initially cylindrical and erect in young plants, but later with the stem base lying on the ground. The stems are usually 1.5 to 3.5 inches (3.8 to 8.9 centimetres) in diameter and up to 25 inches (64 centimetres) high, and obscured by heavy spines.
Euphorbia tithymaloides has a large number of household names used by gardeners and the public. Among them are redbird flower, [7] devil's-backbone, [8] redbird cactus, Jewbush, buck-thorn, cimora misha, Christmas candle, fiddle flower, ipecacuahana, Jacob's ladder, Japanese poinsettia, Jew's slipper, milk-hedge, myrtle-leaved spurge, Padus-leaved clipper plant, red slipper spurge, slipper ...
The stems are armed with clusters of up to about 10 red to pink [10] spines, which may be 3 cm (1.2 in) long [10] and are barbed and sharp enough to easily penetrate leather gardening gloves. [12] The stems and fruits also have many spines or "glochids" about 1 mm (0.04 in) long [ 10 ] that can detach and stick in the skin.
The prehensile-tailed porcupines or coendous (genus Coendou) are found in Central and South America. [2] Two other formerly recognized Neotropical tree porcupine genera, Echinoprocta [3] and Sphiggurus, [4] have been subsumed into Coendou, since Sphiggurus was shown by genetic studies to be polyphyletic, while Echinoprocta nested within Coendou.
Flowers appear in large numbers, always near the tops of the stems. Those of larger-flowered species (such as Hoodia gordonii) are often a papery pink-tan colour, plate-shaped, with an unpleasant smell to attract their fly pollinators. The smaller, darker flowers of some species have a far stronger and more unpleasant smell than the larger flowers.
