The Kauaʻi cave wolf spider (Adelocosa anops, the only species in the genus Adelocosa), also known to local residents as the blind spider, is only known to occur in a few caves in a lava flow with an area of 10.5 km 2 (4.1 sq mi) in the Kōloa–Poʻipū region of Kauaʻi, Hawaiian Islands, and only six populations are known to exist. In January 1778, British navigator James Cook made the first recorded contact between any European and the indigenous people of the Hawaiian Islands when he arrived at Kauai by accident while crossing the Pacific during his third voyage of exploration.

Cook was the first European reported to have sighted the Hawaiian Islands , [ 4 ] and the January 20 landfall on southwestern Kauaʻi was his first arrival upon Hawaiian soil.
The beach has high surf, due to the lack of off shore reefs to break the waves. There are strong rip currents making swimming near impossible. In years past, companies offered a landing service, boating hikers in and out of the beach so that they could hike the trail easily. It is still possible to kayak into and out of the beach.
Hawaiians resisted the lease of the land and initially forbade the sale of provisions to plantation managers. [7] The two groups eventually struck an uneasy partnership that resulted in multiple conflicts as time progressed. Although 980 acres (400 ha) were leased from King Kamehameha III, only 12 acres (4.9 ha) were planted in September 1835.
