Jimmy Ray Johnson (February 4, 1943 – September 5, 2019) was an American session guitarist and record producer. [ 1 ] Johnson was a member of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section who was attached to FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama , for a period in the 1960s.
Several of his brothers had careers in music, among them soul musician Syl Johnson and bassist Mack Thompson, who played with Magic Sam. [2] In his younger years, he played piano and sang in gospel groups. He and his family moved to Chicago in 1950, where he worked as a welder and played guitar in his spare time.
