On April 1, 1987, Chi Alpha Omega Fraternity was founded by sixteen students at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. Alpha Chi Omega is a collegiate women's fraternity established at DePauw University in 1885. When naming its chapters, after the first series, the new series drop one or more corresponding letter sets from the list of available names in this manner: In the "Alpha Alpha" series, there is no Alpha Alpha chapter; the name is unused.
Chi Omega's first series chapters (single-letter) are named for 24 of the Greek letters and assigned in an order customized to Chi Omega, approximating a reverse alphabetical order. The Omega chapter is reserved as a memorial designation; subsequent chapters have likewise not been assigned using the letter Omega in their names.
