The Killings at Badger's Drift is a mystery novel by English writer Caroline Graham and published by Century in 1987. The story follows Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby investigating the murder of an elderly spinster in a rural village. [1] It is the first volume in Graham's Chief Inspector Barnaby series, followed by Death of a Hollow Man.
Since The Killings at Badger's Drift, Graham has written six more Inspector Barnaby novels; the last, A Ghost in the Machine, was published in 2004. [3] The first five Inspector Barnaby novels formed the basis of the first five episodes of Midsomer Murders. She has also written for the soap opera Crossroads.
Selina Cadell played Phyllis Cadell in the pilot episode "The Killings at Badger's Drift" (1997), Eleanor Crouch in "Midsomer Life" (2008) and Venetia Butts in "Book of the Dead" (2023). Simon Callow appeared as Dr. Wellow in "Dead Letters" (2006) and as Vernon De Harthog in "The Curse of the Ninth" (2017).
Filming of Midsomer Murders began in the autumn of 1996, and the first episode, "The Killings at Badger's Drift", was broadcast in the United Kingdom on 23 March 1997. This inaugural episode was the highest-rated single drama programme of 1997, watched by 13.5 million viewers. [2]
Tom Barnaby (played by John Nettles) first appears in the programme's first episode The Killings at Badger's Drift and last appears in Fit for Murder, an episode broadcast on 2 February 2011, which is the final episode of the thirteenth series.
