Peru was founded in 1834 by William N. Hood, who had bought 210 acres (85 hectares) of land from Miamisport's founder Joseph Holman five years earlier. [7] By 1835, court was being held in Peru rather than Miamisport, and the name "Miamisport" quietly disappeared as Peru became the dominant community in the area. [6]
It was named for the Miami, a Native American people, many of whom still live in this area. [5] In 1834, Miami County widened its western border taking some area from Cass County. In 1838 a small portion of unorganized territory was added to the northeastern border, but in 1844 that area was lost to Fulton County.

SR 124 was first designated as a state road in 1932 along a segment of its current route. It was extended west to the Miami–Wabash county line by the late 1930s and to Peru by the early 1950s. The entire route was paved in the early 1960s to the mid-1960s. A reroute in the 2000s bypassed the west side of Bluffton.
