For codes from 0 to 127, the original 7-bit ASCII standard set, most of these characters can be used without a character reference. Note that the current default size depends on context and enclosing formatting: For example, footnotes and references default to displayed in a slightly smaller-than-usual font, and headings (of various levels) default to displaying in a slightly larger font.
