The Lake Wales Historic Residential District is a U.S. historic district (designated as such on August 8, 1997) located in Lake Wales, Florida. The district is bounded by the Seaboard Airline RR grade, CSX RR tracks, East Polk Avenue, South and North Lake Shore Boulevards. It contains 206 historic buildings.
The city of Lake Wales was established near the lake in 1911–1912, planned by the Lake Wales Land Company. [5] The spelling Wales was used for the city, although the lake is still generally spelled Lake Wailes. Allen Carleton Nydegger, a civil engineer, was contracted by the Lake Wales Land Company to plot out the community of Lake Wales. [6]
It bisects that town, taking the name "Scenic Highway" as it winds through Hillcrest Heights, Babson Park and Lake Wales. It continues north, taking names Main Street in Dundee, Hamilton Blvd in Lake Hamilton, and 10th Street in Haines City, where it ends at US 17/92. State Road 17 between Frostproof and Hillcrest Heights.
