Since 2009, I’ve posted a new word on my blog on the first day of each month. My challenge to all who join me in the monthly exercise is to write a poem inspired by that one word.
Some forms are strictly defined, with required line counts and rhyming patterns, such as the sonnet (mostly made of a 14-line poem with a defined rhyme scheme) or limerick (usually a 5-line free rhyme poem with an AABBA rhyme scheme). A clerihew (/ ˈ k l ɛr ɪ h j uː /) is a whimsical, four-line biographical poem of a type invented by Edmund Clerihew Bentley.The first line is the name of the poem's subject, usually a famous person, and the remainder puts the subject in an absurd light or reveals something unknown or spurious about the subject.
"To This Day" is a 2011 spoken word poem written by Shane Koyczan. [1] [2] In the poem, Koyczan talks about bullying he and others received during their lives and its deep, long-term impact. [3] Koyczan first came to international notice when he read his poetry at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics' Opening Ceremony. [4]
The poem employs alliteration, anaphora, simile, satire, and internal rhyme but no regular end rhyme scheme. However, lines 1 and 2 and lines 6 and 8 end with masculine rhymes. Dickinson incorporates the pronouns you, we, us, your into the poem, and in doing so, draws the reader into the piece. The poem suggests anonymity is preferable to fame.
