Winfield Kirkpatrick Denton (October 28, 1896 – November 2, 1971) was an American lawyer, military veteran, and politician who served several terms as a U.S. Representative from Indiana in the mid-20th century.
Benton County is located in the northwest part of the U.S. state of Indiana, along the border with Illinois.As of 2020, the county's population was 8,719. [1] It contains six incorporated towns as well as several small unincorporated settlements; it is divided into 11 townships which provide local services.
Hoffa was born in Brazil, Indiana, on February 14, 1913, to John and Viola (née Riddle) Hoffa. [2] His father, who was of German descent from what is now referred to as the Pennsylvania Dutch, [3] died in 1920 from lung disease when Hoffa was seven years old. [4] His mother was of Irish ancestry. [2]
The first store opened in Enterprise in the 1830s, and the community was a landing stop for river boats in the mid-19th century. [3] The town wasn't officially laid out until 1862. [3] A post office was established at Enterprise in 1852, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1915. [4]
The paper expanded to all of northwest Indiana in 1967 and dropped Hammond from its masthead to become simply The Times. Offices were moved to Munster in 1989, and the paper began morning delivery and began printing different editions based on distribution region. The Howard papers were bought in April 2002 by Lee Enterprises. [3]
