Benewah County (/ ˈ b ɛ n ə ˌ w ɑː /) is a county located in the northwest part of the U.S. state of Idaho. As of the 2020 United States Census the county had a population of 9,530. [ 1 ] The county seat and largest city is St. Maries , which has some area inside the Coeur d'Alene Reservation . [ 2 ]

The approximately 54.36-acre (22.00 ha) facility, near downtown Huntsville, is operated by the Correctional Institutions Division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice . [ 1 ]
The jail system costs a quarter of every county tax dollar in Broward County and is the single largest expense to the county taxpayer. [ 276 ] The National Association of State Budget Officers reports: "In fiscal 2009, corrections spending represented 3.4 percent of total state spending and 7.2 percent of general fund spending."
The state paid $29 million annually for the mixed-security prison. An increasing number of lawsuits related to violent incidents, chronic understaffing and fraudulent recordkeeping revealed deep operational problems. The Idaho State Police and the FBI launched investigations. [2] IDOC took over the facility in 2014.
