Baja California Sur, [a] officially the Free and Sovereign State of Baja California Sur, [b] is the least populated state and the 31st and last state to be admitted to Mexico, in 1974. It is also the ninth-largest Mexican state in terms of area.
These two islands, in the Gulf of California, are protected by UNESCO as biospheres. They are located a short boat ride from La Paz , which lies on the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico . It has a land area of 15.495 km (9.628 mi) and is part of the Municipality of La Paz in Baja California Sur .
The decree on transforming the Territory of Baja California Sur into the Free and Sovereign State of Baja California Sur was published in the Official Journal of the Federation on 8 October 1974.
