View south across the Weald of Kent as seen from the North Downs Way near Detling. The Weald (/ ˈ w iː l d /) is an area of South East England between the parallel chalk escarpments of the North and the South Downs. It crosses the counties of Hampshire, Surrey, West Sussex, East Sussex, and Kent.
The geology of East Sussex is defined by the Weald–Artois anticline, a 60 kilometres (37 mi) wide and 100 kilometres (62 mi) long fold within which caused the arching up of the chalk into a broad dome within the middle Miocene, [1] which has subsequently been eroded to reveal a lower Cretaceous to Upper Jurassic stratigraphy.

The countryside around Lindfield is part of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which runs through Sussex, Surrey and Kent. The High Weald is an ancient landscape, characterised by small fields, woodlands, rolling hills, steep narrow valleys, heaths and sandstone outcrops, and this type of landscape is rare in Europe.
Chalk is an important aquifer and continues to provide the larger part of West Sussex's water supply. Sandstone for use as a building stone has been worked in the Upper Greensand, Hythe and Weald Clay formations. In the Weald, the Horsham Stone, Cuckfield Stone and Ardingly Sandstone have all been quarried for building purposes.
Other nearby settlements include Ticehurst, Burwash, Mayfield and Heathfield in East Sussex, and Lamberhurst, Hawkhurst and Cranbrook in Kent. Physically, Wadhurst lies on a high ridge of the Weald – a range of wooded hills running across Sussex and Kent between the North Downs and the South Downs. The reservoir of Bewl Water is nearby.
