UN Korea Medal. The first United Nations medal to be created was the United Nations Service Medal, also known as the United Nations Service Medal Korea, was awarded to any military service member, of an Armed Force allied with South Korea, who participated in the defense of South Korea from North Korea between 27 June 1950 and 27 July 1953.
The first medal from an international organization accepted for wear by the United States Military was the United Nations Korea Medal in 1951. Subsequent acceptance of other United Nations Medals did not come until 1964 with Executive Order 11139 .

This design is common to the all United Nations Medals starting with the UNTSO Medal and the UNMOGIP Medal and follows the current convention of a common medal design with a varying ribbon. [5] The ribbon of the UN Special Service Medal is wide stripe of light blue, often referred to as UN Blue, [3] with white edges.
On 22 July 1997, during its 3802nd meeting, [1] the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1121, in which it established the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal. [2] In the resolution, the Security Council also requested that the UN Secretary-General establish criteria and procedures for the awarding of the medal. [2]
