Drupada becomes the king of Panchala after the death of Prishata. According to the Adi Parva of the epic, his capital was known as Kampilya. [6] Meanwhile, Drona lives a life of poverty but after his son, Ashvatthama, is teased for being so poor that he is unable to afford milk, he approaches Drupada for help.
King Drupada holds a competition to find a husband for his daughter, Draupadī. The Pandavas arrive in the disguise of Brahmaṇas to partake, and Arjuna wins the competition. When Arjuna comes to tell Kunti the news, without hearing what happened, Kunti orders Arjuna to share whatever he has won amongst all five brothers.
Drupad initially rejects Draupadi and ousts her from the palace but accepts her on Krishna's insistence. Arjuna disguised as a Brahmin wins Draupadi in her Swayamvar arranged by Drupad. Arjuna takes her to his mother who is doing Pooja and without realizing what he is talking about commands him to share whatever he has won with his brothers.

Each Pandava had a son with Draupadi and they were collectively referred to as Upapandavas; their names were Prativindhya (fathered by Yudhishthira), Sutasoma (fathered by Bhima), Shrutakarma (fathered by Arjuna), Shatanika (fathered by Nakula), and Shrutasena (fathered by Sahadeva).
