Yashwantrao Balwantrao Chavan (Marathi pronunciation: [jəʃʋənt̪ɾaːʋ t͡səʋʱaːɳ]; 12 March 1913 – 25 November 1984) was an Indian freedom fighter and politician who served as 8th Minister of Finance from 1970 to 1971 and 1971 to 1974.
Yashwantrao Chavan was the chief minister of Bombay State until its bifurcation into Maharashtra and Gujarat on 1 May 1960. [1] Chavan became the first chief minister of Maharashtra from that day. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] His government continued till 1962 legislative elections , after which Chavan was sworn in for a second term.
Yashwantrao Chavan formed his second ministry as Chief Minister of Maharashtra on 8 March 1962, [1] after leading his Indian National Congress to a majority in 1962 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election. He demitted office in November 1962, having been appointed Minister of Defence by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
