"Woke Up This Morning" is a song by British band Alabama 3 from their 1997 album Exile on Coldharbour Lane. The song is best known as the opening theme music for the American television series The Sopranos, which used a shortened version of the "Chosen One Mix" of the song.
That autumn, 114 students sang the song at the Burglund High School Walk Out and march to McComb, Mississippi, city hall. The song is referred to by Pete Seeger in his 1989 book Everybody Says Freedom.
In 1965, the song was covered in an up-tempo version, with slightly altered lyrics and melody, by the San Francisco folk-pop band We Five. Their recording reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in September 1965 and topped the Billboard easy listening chart for five weeks. [4] Billboard ranked the record as the No. 4 song of 1965.
