The Kailasa temple (Cave 16) is the largest of the 34 Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain cave temples and monasteries known collectively as the Ellora Caves, ranging for over two kilometres (1.2 mi) along the sloping basalt cliff at the site. [5]
Ellora, also called Verul or Elura, is the short form of the ancient name Elloorpuram. [10] The older form of the name has been found in ancient references such as the Baroda inscription of 812 AD which mentions "the greatness of this edifice" and that "this great edifice was built on a hill by Krishnaraja at Elapura, the edifice in the inscription being the Kailasa temple. It is said that they altogether constructed 34 rock-cut shrines, but most extensive and sumptuous of them all is the Kailasanatha temple at Ellora. The temple is a splendid achievement of Dravidian art. The walls of the temple have marvellous sculptures from Hindu mythology including Ravana, Shiva and Parvathi while the ceilings have paintings.
A further development of this variant of Hindu cave temples is the Kailasanatha temple, a monolithic rock temple at Ellora. This free-standing rock temple in a rock pit, which is closed off to the outside by a monumental two-story Gopuram, is considered to be probably the most impressive Hindu rock temple with a side length of 46 meters.
