In computing, plain text is a loose term for data (e.g. file contents) that represent only characters of readable material but not its graphical representation nor other objects (floating-point numbers, images, etc.).
For example, in October 2007, HM Revenue and Customs lost CDs that contained the unencrypted records of 25 million child benefit recipients in the United Kingdom. Modern cryptographic systems resist known plaintext or even chosen plaintext attacks, and so may not be entirely compromised when plaintext is lost or stolen.
Plain language focuses on ways of writing a text so that it is clear, concise, pertinent, efficient, and flows well for the reader. [4] The Center for Plain Language states that: "[a] document, web site or other information is in plain language if the target audience can read it, understand what they read, and confidently act on it". Contrasted to stylised poetry and grand language, the plain style in written text types flows simply and cohesively without the use of rhetorical devices or disconjunctions. It is also written with a different intent. For example, when used in scientific reports, the plain style seeks to convey data as clearly and concisely as possible.

When an RTF file containing mostly Latin characters without diacritics is viewed as a plain text file, the underlying ASCII text is readable, provided that the author has kept formatting concise. When RTF was released, most word processors used binary file formats; Microsoft Word, for example, used the .DOC file format.
