The name Rock Harbor is properly applied to the 11-mile-long (18 km) inlet from Moskey Basin to Scoville Point along the southern shore of the eastern part of Isle Royale. The Rock of Ages Light is a U.S. Coast Guard lighthouse on a small rock outcropping (50 by 200 feet (15 m × 61 m)) [9] approximately 2.25 miles (3.62 km) west of Washington Island and 3.5 miles (5.6 km) west of Isle Royale, in Eagle Harbor Township, Keweenaw County, Michigan (see map below).
Gull Rock, a tiny islet about one-half mile off Manitou's western tip, contains a historic lighthouse built in 1867 which still functions (like the Manitou light) as an unattended navigational aid. Recently a local preservation society acquired the islet and its dilapidated light station, with a view to its ultimate restoration.
On December 6, 1924 the Thomas Friant left Port Wing, Wisconsin to go gillnetting in the middle of Lake Superior. After seeking shelter in Squaw Bay for the night, she froze in. In the morning she broke free, but the ice cut her hull. She then tried to reach the north shore of the lake, because the south shore was completely frozen over.
