The protagonist of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Tanjiro Kamado is the oldest son of a late charcoal-seller, Tanjuro. In the first chapter of the manga, his family (his mother and his younger siblings) is massacred by a demon named Muzan Kibutsuji , with only his sister Nezuko Kamado surviving only to become a demon.
Following an encounter with Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Tanjiro is sent to train with Giyu's former instructor Sakonji Urokodaki in becoming a Demon Slayer and begins his quest to help Nezuko turn into a human again. Two years later, Tanjiro learns the "Water Breathing" style and takes part in a formidable exam.
He developed an additional self-taught form of Water Breathing. Giyu and Tanjiro battle Akaza in the Infinity Castle, and later are the first to face Muzan. He loses his left arm during the battle, but survives. In the Reiwa Era, Giyu's reincarnation is a child named Giichi, who is close friends with Sabito and Makomo's reincarnations.

The season follows Tanjiro and Nezuko as they travel to the Swordsmith Village and join two members of the Demon Slayer Corps' Hashira — Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokito and Love Hashira Mitsuri Kanroji. Along with fellow Demon Slayer Genya Shinazugawa, they strive to fight and protect the village from two attacking Upper Rank demons.
The trio are then set to assist other Demon Slayers dispatched to Mt. Natagumo. Tanjiro and Inosuke enter the forest to face a family of Spider Demons whose mother turned most of the demon slayers into puppets. Tanjiro manages to kill the Mother, who welcomed her demise while warning him that a member of the Kizuki is on the mountain.
