Jaswant Singh Gill (22 November 1939 – 26 November 2019) was an Indian engineer-in-chief at Coal India known for his efforts in rescuing 65 coal miners trapped in a flooded mine in Raniganj, West Bengal, in 1989. This rescue operation is considered one of the most successful coal mine rescue operations in India and the world.

Another major problem is fire in the abandoned mines. One such mine at Brindabanpur, 50 m from NH 19 and 100 m from the Grand Chord railway track, was on fire in 2014. Woken up by the noise of explosions, the residents alerted the Mugma Area offices of ECL. They came and took action to extinguish the fire and fill up the abandoned mine.
Coal in India has been mined since 1774, and India is the second largest producer and consumer of coal after China, mining 997 million metric tons (1,099 million short tons) in FY 2023-24. Around 20% of coal is imported.

Coal India operates through 83 mining areas in 8 states of India. As on 1 April 2015, it has 430 coal mines out of which 175 are open cast, 227 are underground and 28 are mixed mines. [7] Production from open cast mines during FY 2014–15 was 92.91% of total production of 494.24 MT. [7] Underground mines contributed to 7.09% of production.
Highwall mining has been introduced here. Normal open cast methods cannot be used as it is uneconomical to develop the coal seam by such methods in a small, confined area. By using this successful technology for the first time in India, the abandoned Sharda opencast mine has been a landmark in the Indian mining industry. [6]
