Patrick Joseph McGrath (/ m ə ˈ ɡ r ɔː / meh-GRAW; [1] June 11, 1945 – May 7, 2023) was an Irish-born American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church.He served as bishop of the Diocese of San Jose in California from 1999 to 2019 and as an auxiliary bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco from 1989 to 1998.
On July 6, 2010, McElroy was appointed an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of San Francisco and titular bishop of Gemellae in Byzacena by Pope Benedict XVI. On September 7, 2010, McElroy received his episcopal consecration from Archbishop George Niederauer, with Archbishop Emeritus Quinn and Bishop John Wester serving as co-consecrators. [12]
