RTSH dominated the Albanian broadcasting field up to the mid-1990s, a period when privately owned radio and TV stations started to occupy the vast empty Albanian frequencies. RTSH owns and operates a vast number of transmitter sites throughout the country such as the Fushe Dajt and Dajt 1613m stations at Mount Dajt in the periphery of Tirana.
Along with Top Media he also founded the digital platform "DigitAlb" in 2004, the newspaper "Shqip" in 2006, and another channel for 24/7 news coverage named "Top News" in 2007. In 2008, DigitAlb became the first European Platform with six High Definition Channels and the second in the world. This was a big achievement for Albania.

Albania's telephone density was the lowest in Europe, and callers needed operator assistance even to make domestic long-distance calls.
