Streptomyces is the largest genus of Actinomycetota, and the type genus of the family Streptomycetaceae. [3] Over 700 species of Streptomyces bacteria have been described. [4] [5] [6] As with the other Actinomycetota, streptomycetes are gram-positive, and have very large genomes with high GC content.
Streptomyces griseus is a species of bacteria in the genus Streptomyces commonly found in soil. A few strains have been also reported from deep-sea sediments. It is a Gram-positive bacterium with high GC content .
Additionally, 11 conserved signature proteins have been identified which are found in all sequenced Streptomyces species and K. setae. These proteins are believed to be unique to the Streptomycetales order, thus provide molecular markers which can be used to distinguish this group from the rest of the Actinomycetota.
Streptomyces antibioticus was discovered by Selman Waksman and H. Boyd Woodruff, who named the bacterium Actinomyces antibioticus. [2] In their 1941 publication, Waksman and Woodruff describe their use of the "bacterial-agar plate method", in which they mixed a suspension of E. coli with washed agar containing 1.5% NaCl and 0.5% K 3 PO 4. Streptomyces purpurascens is a bacterium species from the genus of Streptomyces which has been isolated from soil. [ 1 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ] Streptomyces purpurascens produces α-l-arabinofuranosidase , isorhodomycin A , rhodomycin A and rhodomycin B .
Streptomyces halstedii is a bacterium species from the genus of Streptomyces which has been isolated from deeper soil layers. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] Streptomyces halstedii produces magnamycin B , vicenistatin deltamycin A2 , deltamycin A3 , bafilomycin B1 and bafilomycin C1 .
Streptomyces olivaceus is a bacterium species from the genus of Streptomyces which has been isolated from soil. [1] [3] [4] Streptomyces olivaceus produces granaticin, elloramycin, tetroazolemycin A and tetroazolemycin B. [5] [6] [7] Streptomyces olivaceus can be used to produce vitamin B12. [8] [9]
