A full size 9mm pre-loaded striker pistol, known as the FN 509, was introduced in early 2016 with it being part of the XM17 Modular Handgun System competition. It was released for public sale in 2017. It is fully ambidextrous and comes in two versions, one version having manual safety and another without it.
[1] [2] The weapon's length, weight, and caliber are identical to the C-9, but it features a new safety, new grip texturing, "Glock-style" front sights, and an elongated sight base, allowing for a Picatinny rail. [3] Limited numbers of C-9s with YEET Cannon G1 marked on the slide became available starting on July 17, 2019. [4]
The Cherokee is equipped with a tactical rail (for lights, etc.), three-dot windage adjustable sights (night sights optional), and enlarged trigger guard, frame-mounted thumb safety and half-cock safety; no magazine safety. The frame is an injected, fiber-reinforced polymer construction.
[11] [better source needed] There is a blade safety on the trigger, and an optional low-profile external ambidextrous manual thumb safety. [11] [better source needed] The 11-round flush-fit magazine holds one more round than the SIG Sauer P365. Extended 13-, 15-, and 17-round magazines also exist.
The pistol uses a pre-tensioned striker firing system, and is chambered in 9mm Luger and .45 ACP. [3] The pistol uses a Browning-type locked-breech short recoil action, with a barrel cam system that is designed to reduce felt recoil. [4] The serialized part of the pistol is a steel chassis, which is fit to a glass-filled nylon frame.
