On March 19, 1775, the day of the Charles Robertson Watauga purchase, 175 of the Watauga settlers petitioned the North Carolina Legislature to become a county. The petition indicated a need for government and court jurisdiction. [5] The request went unheeded and another petition was sent more than a year later.
