Eric Goldman of IGN gave "Now is Not the End" a score of 8 out of 10, indicating a "Great" episode, and praised Atwell's performance as Carter as well as her dynamic with D'Arcy's Jarvis. Goldman felt that the period setting was used well, despite the episode feeling "like a TV show compared to the Marvel movies (being a TV show and all)".

By July 2012, Marvel Television had entered into discussions with ABC to create a show set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). [1] In August, ABC ordered a pilot for a series called S.H.I.E.L.D., developed by Joss Whedon who wrote and directed the MCU film The Avengers (2012); [2] the series was renamed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. when it was officially picked up by ABC. Carter fights the assailant, who mortally wounds Brannis. Carter, Jarvis, and Brannis leap from the truck and allow it, and the man, to drive over a cliff and into a lake. The impact causes the weapons to implode, signaling their location to the arriving SSR agents. Brannis draws a strange symbol in the dirt as a warning to Carter, before dying.
