Union has a faculty of scholars in the fields of Bible, Christian education, theology, ethics, preaching, worship, church history, Christian leadership, and pastoral care. Faculty come from a range of denominational backgrounds, including Baptist, Lutheran, and Methodist.
It was founded in 1836 by members of the Presbyterian Church in the USA, [6] but was open to students of all denominations. Born Elizabeth Rice on June 11, 1926, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Achtemeier was raised in the Presbyterian Church (USA), in which her grandfather had been a minister. [1] She had three older brothers. [2] She completed undergraduate studies at Stanford University and studied at Union Theological Seminary in New York from 1948 until 1951. [1]
